Combine an interview winning resume, a strategic marketing campaign and a powerful interview presentation and you have the ingredients to orchestrate a successful career transition.
A crowded ballroom of nearly 1,000 people applauded in a collective demonstration of appreciation for this year's Spotlight winners. Joining in the ovation was this year's keynote speaker, Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White.
Just one person from each United Way partner agency was carefully selected and honored for exemplary volunteer service.
Tina Fisher, a volunteer with Transitional Housing, Inc., was one of the volunteers spotlighted for her contributions to the agency and the community.
"Ms. Fisher makes herself available to the participants of Transitional Housing, Inc. as a resume writer; once a month she holds a resume workshop here," Kathi Wilson, the agency's volunteer coordinator, explained.
"She meets with them individually and then writes and types their resume and gives them a cover letter if necessary."
Because our program is about women moving on to independent living, this is a fabulous service. It helps give women the resources and confidence to look for a job."
Voicing his praise and appreciation for the Spotlight winners and other United Way supporters was 1998 Campaign Chair David Hoag, recently retired chairman and chief executive officer or the LTV Corporation.
Under Hoag's leadership and campaign slogan, "Taking It to the Next Level," United Way achieved its third consecutive year of campaign growth with this year's total of more then $43 million. Hoag said that it takes special volunteers and dedicated staff members to take our agencies "to the next level" every day.
"Today's spotlight literally shines on each special volunteer during our program. It gives us all a chance to say 'thank you' for playing a vital role in helping to take our partner agencies to the next level of caring through extraordinary, selfless dedication and hard work."Robert S. Reitman, Chairman of the Board United Way Services
"It's the hard work and dedication of a Spotlight Award winner that explains why United Way agencies positively impact our community's quality of life. Each honoree exemplifies the United Way mission: 'To increase the organized capacity of people to care for themselves and one another."K. Michael Benz, President and CEO United Way Services
